The political landscape in Anambra State is poised for a significant transformation as the All Progressives Congress (APC) intensifies its efforts to establish a strong foothold in the region. A pivotal moment in this endeavor occurred during the party's governorship primary election held at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka. Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, the Governor of Cross River State and Chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee for Anambra State, expressed unwavering confidence in the party's potential to secure victory in the upcoming November 8, 2025, governorship election.

Addressing a gathering of 1,630 delegates and numerous party officials, Governor Otu emphasized the strategic importance of Anambra within the Southeastern region. He articulated a vision where Anambra aligns with the central government, thereby enhancing the state's developmental prospects. "Anambra is the heart of the Southeastern states," Governor Otu remarked. "We must present a candidate who can win the general election and align Anambra with the government at the center. The APC already governs two states in the Southeast—winning a third would be a major victory and a strategic gain for the region."

The governor's call for unity was a central theme in his address. He urged all party members to rally behind the candidate who emerges from the primary, underscoring that collective commitment is essential for success in the main election. This sentiment was reinforced by the revelation that all aspirants had convened the previous evening and unanimously agreed to support the eventual nominee, highlighting a shared dedication to party cohesion.

The APC's ambition to expand its influence in Anambra is not a recent development. In December 2023, the party officially welcomed prominent political figures, including Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and Senator Uche Ekwunife, along with their supporters. This strategic move was aimed at bolstering the party's presence and competitiveness in the state. During the welcoming ceremony, State Chairman Chief Basil Ejidike expressed optimism about the party's prospects, stating, "We can achieve this great feat if we want because the manpower and resources are readily available."

Senator Ubah, in his acceptance speech, emphasized the need for Anambra to connect with the central government to drive development. He asserted, "APC would no longer keep quiet in Anambra, pretending that all was well when things are going wrong. APC has finally arrived in Anambra State."

This statement reflects a broader strategy to integrate Anambra more closely with national governance structures.

The party's organizational efforts have been evident in its meticulous planning for the governorship election. On January 24, 2025, the APC released a schedule for its off-cycle Anambra State governorship election, setting the primary for March 29. The schedule outlined that aspirants would pay N50 million to purchase expression of interest and nomination forms, with concessions made for female aspirants, persons living with disabilities, and youths aged between 25 to 40, who were offered discounts or exemptions.

The party's commitment to inclusivity and broad-based participation was further demonstrated through its membership drive. The Anambra State chapter of the APC commenced a registration exercise targeting over one million members. This initiative, coordinated by a five-man committee led by former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Dr. Chris Akomas, aimed to strengthen the party's grassroots presence and mobilize support ahead of the election.

In the lead-up to the primary election, notable aspirants emerged, each bringing unique strengths to the contest. Mr. Nicholas Ukachukwu, for instance, declared his intention to contest by making a substantial donation of ₦63 million to the party. He emphasized the need to "oil our party machinery for optimal performance in the coming governorship primary election and the Anambra state governorship election." Such gestures underscored the aspirants' commitment to the party's success and their recognition of the resources required to mount a formidable campaign.

The primary election itself was conducted with a focus on transparency and credibility. Governor Otu assured delegates of a fair process, noting that the presence of independent observers and representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would ensure the integrity of the election. The orderly conduct of the primary was met with satisfaction from delegates and observers alike, reflecting the party's dedication to democratic principles.

The APC's strategic maneuvers in Anambra are indicative of a broader effort to consolidate political influence in the Southeast. By attracting high-profile politicians, implementing comprehensive membership drives, and ensuring transparent electoral processes, the party aims to position itself as a viable alternative in a region traditionally dominated by other political entities.

As the November 8 governorship election approaches, the APC's activities in Anambra will undoubtedly be closely scrutinized by political analysts and the electorate. The party's ability to maintain internal cohesion, effectively mobilize supporters, and present a compelling vision for the state's future will be critical factors in determining its success. Governor Otu's leadership and the collective efforts of the party's stakeholders reflect a concerted push to bring Anambra into the APC fold, signaling a potentially transformative period in the state's political trajectory.
