Following President Bola Tinubu's departure for Paris on April 2, 2025, Vice President Kashim Shettima traveled to Dakar, Senegal, on April 3 to represent the president at Senegal's 65th Independence Day celebrations.
Senegal commemorates its independence from French colonial rule annually on April 4. The celebrations in Dakar include ceremonies, parades, and cultural events at the Place de la Nation. Vice President Shettima's attendance underscores the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Senegal.
The timing of their trips has attracted criticism from opposition parties, who express concerns about governance gaps during their absence. The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) warns that simultaneous foreign travels by the president and vice president could lead to lapses in addressing national issues.
In response, a senior government official defends the trips as legitimate, stating that the country's operations continue smoothly in their absence.
Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria on April 4 after the one-day event.
