A Bill of Hope and Long Life.

On Thursday, 6th March, my dear friend and colleague, Hon. Olubodun Festus Olugbenga and myself presented: A Bill For An Act To Provide Certain Rights For Older People In Order To Ensure Health And Economic Relief And Protection For Their Social And Civil Rights And For Other Related Matters to the green chambers.

It's my strong belief that a country with a good social welfare policy for their senior citizens is a country destined for greatness.

The bill when enacted into law will significantly cover the following flanges:

1. Prohibition of Discrimination Against Older Person.

2. Rights of Older Persons.

3. Mobility and Accessibility to Physical Structures.

4. Housing.

5. Road. Transportation.

6. Airport Facilities.

7. Seaports and Railways.

8. Rebates.

9. Right to First Consideration in Queues and in Emergencies.

10. Liberty.

11. Communal Life.

12. Adequate Standard of Living and Social Protection.

13. Participation in Politics and Public Life.

There are a lot more contained in this bill that will ensure the wellbeing and increased life expectancy of the senior citizens of this great country. This indeed is a bill of hope and long life.

I thank my friend and colleague, Hon. Festus Olugbenga for standing by me to see this all-important bill through the first reading. I also thank Distinguished Senator Eze Ajoku for championing the need for this bill. I will not fail to encourage the good people of this country to mention this bill in their prayers and keep loving and caring for the elderly in our various communities.

A country given with a vibrant senior population is a country given to wisdom and prosperity.

To God be the Glory.

Hon. Sir Tochukwu Okere
