The campaign in Imo State which is championed by Her Excellency Barr Chioma Uzodimma has earned wide accolades and commendations.
Also having the Deputy Governor, Dr Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, PhD, who has declared her public support for the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation, FGM in the state and widely.
The campaign which was organized by my lovely wife Mrs Gertrude Nwanegwo, at the local government headquarters, Nwaorieubi had lots of Leaders, guest speakers, Community women Leaders, Youths and students in attendance.
The long-standing harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilation is the act of partial or total removal, mostly at birth, of the external parts of the genitalia of girls and women which in our local traditional language is called "ibi nwanyi ugwu" for no medical reason or benefit.
The age long practiced Female Genital Mutilation (ibi ugwu) in our society has been said to inflicts extreme pains on the girl child, it causes them severe bleeding, fever, diseases, difficulty in urination, tissue damage, inflammation around the genital area and deaths. The girl-child develops urinary track infections, painful menstruation, complications with child births, prone to caesarean section, develop poor sexual desire and satisfaction, depression, anxiety and many others.
According to report available from the World Health Organization, above 230 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in about 30 countries in Africa, Middle East and Asia, where it is practiced. The frightening report of 4 million girls at risk of this FGM menace per annual is disheartening.
I have added my voice to encourage the barbaric practice of Female Genital Mutilation which is a form of Gender Based Violence (GbV) to stop forthwith. Stop! Stop!! Stop!!!
Though we have been told in the past of the benefits associated with the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), funny enough they are deceptive benefits.
God who created the girl-child gave them the ability to be reproductive and doesn't need the FGM to conceive at ease.
I want to appreciate the wife of the Governor, Her Excellency Chief Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, for her unflinching commitment to the abolishment of this barbaric practice of Female Genital Mutilation, while my wonderful wife Mrs. Gertrude Nwanegwo and her team took the campaign to the grassroots.
