Mrs. Uju Ezeobi, a Nigerian woman who reported a multi-million-naira land fraud, has died while in police custody at the Nigeria Police Zonal Headquarters (Zone 13) in Ukpo, Anambra State. According to reports, she was allegedly tortured during her detention.

The case originated in 2021 when Mrs. Nkiruka Duru, president of the United Business Women Association, persuaded investors to purchase land in Achala. Mrs. Ezeobi facilitated these sales but later discovered that Duru had allegedly diverted over N200 million instead of delivering the promised land. After unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter, Ezeobi reported the fraud to the police, leading to formal charges against Duru.

Despite the case progressing to court, Duru allegedly used her influence to manipulate the investigation. In a controversial development, the case was transferred to Zone 13, where Ezeobi was arrested on March 24, 2025, by a team led by SP Utazi. Her lawyers condemned the arrest as unlawful, and images of her in custody were reportedly circulated online by Duru’s associates

Following a petition submitted by her legal team to the Inspector-General of Police, accusing certain officers of collaborating with Duru to intimidate and unlawfully detain her, Ezeobi was confirmed dead just hours later. Her lawyers allege that she was deliberately held on false charges and subjected to inhumane treatment. They are now calling for an independent investigation and for the case to be returned to the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID) in Abuja for proper prosecution.

This incident underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies to prevent abuses and ensure justice for all individuals involved in legal proceedings.
