Nigeria's CP Ifeanyi Uche Named Chairman of INTERPOL's African Heads of Cybercrime Units

Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Uche, Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), has been appointed as the chairman of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL’s) African Heads of Cybercrime Units. CP Uche's appointment was announced on Friday, May 3, following the conclusion of the 10th Africa Working Group meeting on cybercrime for heads of units held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel from April 29th to May 3.


In his inaugural speech, CP Uche emphasized the critical threat posed by cybercrime to societies, economies, and security, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to address this growing challenge across Africa. 


He pledged to lead efforts to foster collaboration among member units to enhance collective abilities to prevent and investigate cybercrimes effectively.


CP Uche highlighted the importance of championing a new era of technological renaissance and home-grown cybersecurity ethics in Africa, advocating for a shift from dependence on external solutions to leveraging African-nurtured technological initiatives. 


He emphasized the potential for significant strides in combating cybercrime and creating a safer digital environment for all Africans through collective action.


The Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, commended the extensive participation of over 120 delegates from 54 African countries and beyond, underscoring the significance of collaboration in strengthening cybersecurity frameworks. 


She emphasized the imperative for African nations to bolster cybersecurity measures in the face of increasing digitization, acknowledging the borderless nature of cybercrime and the necessity for concerted efforts to mitigate risks effectively.
