The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed alarming findings, implicating a significant number of former governors in the misappropriation, embezzlement, or laundering of approximately N2.187 trillion over a 25-year period.
According to the EFCC, this staggering amount excludes properties seized globally or currently under investigation, which collectively amount to billions of Naira, indicating the widespread nature of the corruption allegations.
The reported N2.2 trillion embezzled bears significant comparison to the combined budgets of Lagos State and the South-East states for 2024, amounting to N2.25 trillion and N2.29 trillion respectively.
This revelation underscores the scale of the financial malfeasance, surpassing the budgets of the North-Central and North-East states for 2024, which stand at N1.89 trillion and N1.60 trillion respectively, by several billion Naira.
The EFCC's allegations serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for robust accountability measures within Nigeria's governance framework to combat corruption effectively and ensure transparency and accountability in public office.
