Bolaji Salako, a Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has underscored the importance of caution among Muslim faithfuls as they observe Ramadan. Speaking exclusively to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Monday, Salako emphasized the potential health risks associated with fasting during the holy month.

Salako flagged dehydration as a significant concern, particularly in the context of the hot climate prevalent during Ramadan. He cautioned that prolonged periods without water intake could lead to various complications, including fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and even more severe issues such as kidney challenges if left unaddressed.

Moreover, Salako highlighted the impact of fasting on blood sugar levels, particularly for individuals managing conditions like diabetes. He stressed the importance of staying hydrated during non-fasting hours and advised fasting individuals to consume balanced diets to mitigate the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Acknowledging the religious significance of fasting, Salako urged individuals with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer to collaborate closely with their healthcare providers. He emphasized the necessity of adjusting medication schedules and closely monitoring health conditions throughout the Ramadan period to ensure optimal management of health risks associated with fasting.

In light of Salako's professional insights, it becomes imperative for fasting individuals to prioritize their health and well-being by adopting strategies to mitigate the potential health risks posed by fasting during Ramadan.
