Former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressing a disconnect between his personal principles and the current course of the party. In a letter addressed to the chairman of his constituency, Mbutu Ward, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Ihedioha reiterated his commitment to the advancement of democracy and good governance in Nigeria despite parting ways with the PDP.
Having been a member of the PDP since its inception in 1998, Ihedioha underscored his significant contributions to the party's growth and development over the years. He highlighted the party's historical dedication to internal reforms and providing credible leadership, both in and out of power. However, Ihedioha expressed disappointment with recent developments within the party, indicating a departure from its core values.
In his resignation letter, Ihedioha lamented the party's inability to enforce internal reforms, uphold its regulations, and effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized his efforts to offer guidance to the party but noted its failure to heed his counsel.
Quoting from the letter, Ihedioha stated, "Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs." He further explained that despite the difficulty of his decision, he believes it is the right one. Despite resigning from the PDP, Ihedioha expressed his willingness to continue contributing to the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
