In a recent court ruling, the Anambra State government, along with the State House of Assembly and the Commissioner for Justice, has been directed to pay N5 million in exemplary damages to the plaintiff due to the prolonged absence of local government elections.
This decision comes after years of neglecting to hold elections, with the last one taking place in November 2014 during the Obi administration.
Despite promises from subsequent administrations, including that of Governor Obiano, no elections were conducted during their tenures.
The current Governor, Soludo, has also been criticized for failing to initiate the electoral process. The plaintiff argues that the absence of democratic representation at the local level is detrimental to the state's governance and accountability.
As the case progresses, the state government has yet to announce a date for the hearing.
