Former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, made headlines when he publicly disclosed the rationale behind his decision to disregard the Labour Party's National convention held in Anambra State. In an interview on X Space hosted by Parallel Facts on Friday, Obi elucidated that his absence was motivated by the failure of the party leadership, under Julius Abure, to engage in extensive consultations with key stakeholders prior to convening the convention.
Emphasizing the imperative of adhering to due process to salvage the party, Obi underscored his commitment to advancing the cause of a new Nigeria over prioritizing the interests of the Labour Party alone. He stated, "We promised to build Nigeria, we did not promise to build a New Labour Party," highlighting his broader vision for national transformation.
Obi further articulated the importance of aligning with global norms, noting that it is customary for movements to coalesce into blocs and actively participate in the political landscape. This assertion underscores his belief in the necessity of strategic alliances for effective political engagement.
The backdrop to Obi's statement is the contentious reelection of Julius Abure during the National convention, amidst ongoing power struggles between factions led by Abure and Apapa Lamidi. Notably, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has voiced opposition to Abure's continued leadership within the party, further complicating the internal dynamics of the Labour Party.
