"Nigeria Launches Bold CNG Initiative to Slash Fuel Costs by 70%"

The federal government of Nigeria has embarked on an ambitious initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs by up to 70% through the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative to traditional petroleum-based fuels. This move comes in response to the withdrawal of petroleum subsidies, prompting officials to seek viable alternatives to alleviate the financial burden on citizens.

 Speaking during the flag off ceremony of Nigerian Army fleet auto switch and training held in Abuja, the Minister of Transportation, Sen Said Alkali, highlighted the government's commitment to improving the welfare of the Nigerian people. The initiative involves training programs and the conversion of vehicles in the Army fleet to utilize CNG, with significant interest from investors and petroleum dealers alike. 

President Muhammadu Buhari's commitment to the initiative was underscored, with substantial cost savings anticipated, such as a trip from Abuja to Kaduna expected to plummet from N80,000 to just N15,000 with CNG. Collaborating with stakeholders, including government entities and private sector partners, the National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) has been instrumental in driving the initiative forward. 

With CNG infrastructure already in place in key areas, such as Abuja and Kaduna, Nigerians are hopeful that this shift will not only alleviate financial strain but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

 The initiative aims to generate employment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer, bolster auto manufacturing, and improve critical gas distribution infrastructure. Aligning with Nigeria's commitments to its National Determined Contributions, the CNG Initiative promises to spur economic growth and contribute to a cleaner environment.

 Championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the initiative is praised for its potential to reduce transportation costs and carbon emissions nationwide. The involvement of the Ministry of Steel Development, led by Prince Shuaibu Audu, further underscores the government's commitment to the initiative, with plans to leverage the Ajaokuta steel complex to produce CNG power and manufacture essential CNG kits. 

Conversations are underway to establish a military industrial complex within the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, demonstrating the comprehensive approach to implementing the CNG program. 

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, emphasized the significance of the Army's involvement in the initiative, recognizing the necessity given the extensive fleet of vehicles utilized in securing the nation daily.
