The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) conducted a successful raid in the bustling commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra, seizing banned pharmaceutical products valued at millions of naira. The raid, part of NAFDAC's ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of illegal substances, also targeted factories producing counterfeit alcoholic beverages in Enugu and Imo states.
According to Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director for the South East Zone, the confiscated drugs in Onitsha included a variety of dangerous substances such as Codeine Syrup, Rohypnol tablets, and Tramadol capsules. Iluyomade emphasized the serious public health risks posed by these drugs, particularly highlighting the use of Rohypnol by criminal elements in activities such as kidnapping and rape.
In addition to the seizure in Onitsha, NAFDAC uncovered a factory operating under the name BEST IJAW in Enugu State, specializing in the production of unapproved dry gin. The conditions of the factory were described as unsanitary, raising concerns about the safety and quality of the products being manufactured. Similarly, a factory in Imo State was found to be counterfeiting popular wine and spirit brands, leading to the arrest of the operators.
The collaboration between NAFDAC and law enforcement agencies, including the Directorate of State Services, played a crucial role in the success of these operations. Iluyomade emphasized NAFDAC's dedication to protecting consumers from harmful products and urged the public to be vigilant when purchasing beverages, ensuring they look for the seal of quality.
These latest actions by NAFDAC underscore the agency's commitment to safeguarding public health and reducing the prevalence of counterfeit products in the market. By targeting illicit pharmaceuticals and fake alcohol production, NAFDAC aims to create a safer environment for consumers across the Southeast region.
