Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), confirmed that the commission did not monitor the convention held by the Labour Party (LP). Oyekanmi, while speaking to reporters from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, refrained from disclosing further details regarding why INEC opted not to oversee the event.

The LP had initially announced the convention to be held in Umuahia, Abia State. However, a subsequent announcement shifted the venue to Nnewi, Anambra State. Despite this change, Kehinde Edun, the LP National Legal Adviser, emphasized that the party duly informed INEC about the alteration in both venue and date.

Edun clarified the venue shift, stating definitively, "No, it is holding in Anambra. Nnewi to be precise, not Umuahia in Abia State again." He further elaborated on the party's prerogative in selecting the venue, asserting, "So, we are at liberty to pick any venue of our choice. We only need to inform INEC about the change in venue and the time."

The Electoral Act of 2022, as stipulated in Section 82(1), mandates that political parties must notify INEC at least 21 days in advance of conventions, congresses, conferences, or meetings. These gatherings include those convened for the purpose of mergers, electing members of executive committees, governing bodies, or nominating candidates.
