Former Mississippi Police Officers Face Sentencing for Torturing Black Men

Six former police officers in Mississippi are on the brink of facing sentencing after admitting guilt to federal civil rights offenses.

The harrowing incident, which transpired in 2023 without a warrant, involved the brutal torture of two black men in their own home. Shockingly, the officers, who dubbed themselves the "Goon Squad," engaged in despicable acts of violence including beatings, stun gun shocks, and sexual assault. Tragically, one victim was shot in the mouth during a horrific mock execution.

The sentencing proceedings, commencing with Hunter Elward and continuing with Christian Dedmon, Brett McAlpin, Jerffrey Middleton, Daniel Opydke, and Joshua Hartfield, could result in lengthy imprisonments for each officer.

The charges encompass grave offenses such as conspiracy against rights, obstruction of justice, and deprivation of rights under color of law. This appalling episode unfolded when the officers, all white, unlawfully entered the home of Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker in response to a dubious report.

Both victims have fervently called for the stiffest of sentences for their tormentors, underscoring the gravity of the crimes committed.
