The somber atmosphere of grief enveloped the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lion of Judah Parish, Isiokpi, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, as mourners gathered to bid farewell to the late Access Bank boss, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba, and son, Chizi. The tragic demise of Herbert Wigwe, his wife Doreen, son Chizzy, and former Managing Director of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, in a helicopter crash in the US on February 9, has left a profound impact on the nation.


Tears flowed freely as friends, family, and dignitaries paid their last respects at the funeral ceremony. Among the notable personalities in attendance were Governors Sim Fubara (Rivers), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), alongside Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom state, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state, and the King of Okochiri Kingdom, Ateke Tom.




The presence of prominent figures such as Aliko Dangote, Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Obi, Bukola Saraki, Seriake Dickson, and Kayode Fayemi added gravitas to the occasion, underscoring the widespread impact of Herbert Wigwe's legacy. Notable clergy members, traditional rulers from Omoeke, Wigwe's hometown, and monarchs from Isiokpo also paid their respects, reflecting the deep-rooted connections Herbert Wigwe had within his community and beyond.


The burial ceremony, presided over by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, and attended by Dr. Godknows Igali, a former Nigerian Ambassador, served as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring legacy of those who leave an indelible mark on society. As Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son are laid to rest, their memory will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew them.
