 NASS introduces Bill to criminalise non-payment of salaries by employers

The House of Representatives introduces a bill to criminalise non-payment of salaries by employers nationwide.

Sponsored by Wale Hammed, the bill titled “The Employees Remuneration Protection Bill, 2023” proposes imprisonment for employers failing to pay salaries, with no option for a fine.

Employees, when the bill becomes law, can submit a written claim for unpaid wages.

Section 7(1) deems it unlawful for employers to neglect salary payments, while Section 8(1) empowers employees to demand payment if compensation remains unpaid beyond the specified period.
