By GOC NWADIKE

The Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Sen. Hope Uzodinma today, Monday 1st of January, 2024 commenced the New Year with a Thanksgiving Holy Mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Parish; a Church he single-handedly built for his people in his Ozuh, Omuma, Oru-East LGA.

The outing is in appreciation to almighty God for giving him "victory over the myriad of challenges of the passing year", while praying for wisdom, peace, a prosperous and safer Imo in the new year 2024.

Speaking later in his welcome/appreciation remarks, Gov. Uzodinma said the year 2024 is not meant for talking and complaining. "This Year is meant for action and prosperity. We have complained and lamented enough. This Year, the mountain we saw yesterday, we shall see them no more", he assured.

He lamented that the global events of last year were not so friendly for the economy, but added that the President, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, is doing everything possible through reforms that would help stabilize the economy of the nation, even as these reforms, he explained, do not usually come easier.

Gov. Uzodinma called for patience from the people, assuring that "what we were not able to achieve last year in Imo State, we will achieve in this year 2024".

He also challenged the academia to ensure that students and graduates being churned out from higher institutions are instilled with employable skills that would make them fit easily to society and employment requirements, while also calling on civil servants and employees to shun corrupt  tendencies which have been the bane of the nation's economic developments.

The Governor promised his people that he would do his best in his second term in office to their admiration.

The Thanksgiving Mass was led by the Local Ordinary, the Bishop of Orlu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Toochukwu Ukwuoma who harped   on the need for peace in Imo State, and unity in the country.

Bishop Ukwuoma earlier in his homely condemned the news of demolitions of shops and properties in certain part of the country, warning that the exercise must not be seen to be targeting a particular set of people in the country.

He also called on governments at all levels to ensure that they stuck to their budget plans for the New Year, while ensuring adequate security of lives and properties.

The First Reading of the Mass was read by the Deputy Governor of the state, Prof. Placid Njoku, while His Excellency, Gov. Hope Uzodinma read the Second Reading.

The Thanksgiving Mass was attended by who-is-who in Imo State and beyond, including former and serving members of the National Assembly, former and serving ministers from the state, members of the Diplomatic Corps led by Amb. Greg Mbadiwe, members of the Imo State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Hon. Chike Olemgbe, the Judiciary led by the Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Sir.
